Research Note #04

The Clarity Audit

It's time to look at your own website. Not as the business owner. Not as the person who built it. As a complete stranger. Because strangers don't know your industry, your terminology, your process — they only know what they see. And they decide surprisingly quickly whether it's worth sticking around.

The 5 Second Test

Open your homepage. Look at it for five seconds. Then answer these questions:

  • What does this business do? Could you explain it in one sentence?
  • Who is it for? Is the target audience obvious?
  • What is the main benefit? What outcome is being promised?
  • What should I do next? Is there a clear next step?

If you struggled to answer any of those questions, your visitors probably are too.

The Homepage Checklist

Review your headline, subheadline, hero image, call to action and supporting text.

Does each element help a complete stranger understand what you do? If not, it's creating uncertainty.

Practical Takeaway

Run the 5 Second Test on your own website. Better yet, ask someone who knows nothing about your business to do it. Their answers will tell you exactly where your clarity breaks.
