Research Note #15
CTAs Are Not Magic
Button text does matter. Just not nearly as much as people think. Changing the button doesn't solve any of the fundamental uncertainty problems visitors face. A CTA isn't there to persuade somebody. A CTA is there to guide somebody who's already decided.
The CTA Myth
Many businesses treat their CTA like it's the problem. Conversion rates are low? Let's change the button. Not enough enquiries? Try a different button. Sales aren't improving? Maybe the button should be orange.
Meanwhile, visitors are still wondering: What do you actually do? Is this right for me? Can I trust you? What happens next?
Changing the button doesn't solve any of those problems.
The Real Job Of A CTA
A CTA isn't there to persuade somebody. A CTA is there to guide somebody. Think of it like a signpost. A signpost doesn't convince you to drive somewhere. It simply tells you where to turn. The decision to go there happened earlier.
Practical Takeaway
Before you optimise your CTA, make sure visitors have everything they need to make a confident decision. If the page before the button isn't doing its job, no button text will save it.
