Research Note #16

Urgency Without Being Annoying

Urgency works — the research is fairly consistent on that. But the problem isn't urgency. The problem is fake urgency. And the internet is absolutely full of it. The moment people realise your urgency isn't real, trust disappears.

Why Urgency Works

Urgency reduces procrastination. Without a deadline, people delay decisions. They tell themselves: 'I'll come back later.' Unfortunately, 'later' has a habit of turning into never. A genuine deadline helps people make a decision today rather than indefinitely postponing it.

Why Fake Urgency Fails

We've all seen it. 'Only 1 Spot Remaining!' 'Offer Ends Tonight!' 'Sale Ends In: 23:59:59.' Then you come back tomorrow and the timer is still there. What a miracle.

The moment people realise your urgency isn't real, trust disappears. And trust is much harder to rebuild than it is to lose.

Practical Takeaway

Use urgency only when it's genuine. A real deadline, a limited capacity, a genuine time constraint. If you can't back it up, don't use it. Trust is too valuable to lose.
